Black River
Float Trip Guide.
Lesterville’s upper river and the water below Clearwater make two different Black River trips. Pick one stretch, find its gauge, and give the day room to unfold.
Today on the Black River
Eddy reads the gauge, the trend, and the forecast and writes a fresh take a few times a day. Use it as one input alongside your own judgment, the outfitter you’re renting from, and current advisories from the agency that manages your stretch.
Why the Black River is different
Say “Black River weekend” and many Missouri floaters picture Lesterville. The upper river’s gravel bars and bluff-lined bends make a convincing case for packing the cooler and taking the whole day. The East, Middle, and West Forks meet in this part of the state, but the main-stem float is its own trip; the rocky headwater shut-ins are not simply extra miles to add upstream.
Clearwater Lake is the big dividing line. Below the dam, the Black changes pace and its flow depends partly on releases. Decide which side of the lake your trip belongs to before comparing gauges or booking a shuttle. The routes in this guide are separate outings, not a route across the lake and dam.
- Above Clearwater Lake, the river brings together gravel stops, bluffs, and a well-known floating area.
