James River
Float Trip Guide.
Delaware Town, Shelvin Rock, and the old Y-Bridge give the James several ways into a river day. Pick one stretch and leave the rest for the next visit.
Today on the James River
Eddy reads the gauge, the trend, and the forecast and writes a fresh take a few times a day. Use it as one input alongside your own judgment, the outfitter you’re renting from, and current advisories from the agency that manages your stretch.
Why the James River is different
The James is a reminder that a satisfying float does not have to start with a long drive into the deep Ozarks. South of Springfield, public accesses break the river into days of wooded banks, pools, and fishing stops. Pick a modest distance, sort the shuttle, and you can spend more of the day on the water than getting there.
The Galena stretch and the river near Springfield are different planning choices. Water and runoff change along the way toward Table Rock Lake. Match the gauge and local observations to the reach you picked, rather than treating the entire James as one uniform float.
- Delaware Town, Shelvin Rock, and Hootentown let you plan separate outings instead of committing to one long trip.
