Portage the low-head dams — there is one at the Hwy 96 access (portage river-right) and the old mill dam near Galesburg. This is a flashy prairie-fed river: never float on high or muddy water, and if the gauge is rising or the water is brown and carrying debris, stay off. Plan to self-shuttle — public accesses sit 3–7 miles apart from the upper put-ins down to Kafir Bridge, the last Missouri access above the state line.
