The longest river entirely within Missouri (~280 mi) and 'one of the world's crookedest', a winding low-gradient Ozark float stream that rises in the southeastern Webster/Wright County Ozarks and flows generally north-northeast through the Salem Plateau to the Missouri River at Gasconade. Incised meanders and scenic dolostone/sandstone bluffs (the plateau stands ~300 ft above the river near Waynesville); numerous springs and caves. Difficulty Class I–II (II seldom); a good, uncrowded float stream — common to go miles without seeing another boat. Largemouth and smallmouth bass. Major tributaries: Osage Fork, Roubidoux Creek, and Big Piney River. Spring-influenced but runoff-responsive; long floatable season; many low-water access bridges. Long enough to warrant multiple calibration reaches (upper near Hazelgreen, middle at Jerome, lower near Rich Fountain).
